Saving Money: Exporting Your Dental and Medical Needs Abroad to Nicaragua

Dentists In Nicaragua

My two trips to the dentist this week really got me thinking about the differences between the cost of living here in Canada versus down in Nicaragua. The two trips that I made to the dentist (One for my annual X-Rays and the other for a cleaning) cost me $495.99 (221.88 + 274.11) which in my opinion is absolutely ridiculous ($250/Hour). It would have cost me only about half as much back in Vancouver due to the fact that I have been seeing that dentist for over 20 years, and had I been in Nicaragua about $25. What I am wondering is where is the extra value and how can a dentist justify charging 20x what the most expensive Nicaraguan dentist charged me when I went last  September and again in March. What I find funny is that the Nicaraguan dentist that I see is educated and trained in the US and is equally as professional in what he does as the one here in Toronto. There are only a negligible differences between the workmanship as well as equipment and technology, so once again I am confused as to where the additional value lays.

I am currently in need of getting all four of my wisdom teeth pulled which means that here in Canada I will be paying out another $1,600 minimum (unfortunately my company does not offer extended dental and medical insurance ;). What I have thought of doing is flying down to Managua and getting my teeth pulled down there because the dentist I see is equally as good at his job as my Canadian dentist. Another thing to note is that should any health complications arise, the Vivian Pallas Metropolitan Hospital is on par quality wise with what you would expect here in Canada or the US (at about 1/10 the cost). Although I would never trust them with heart bypass surgery or anything as technically difficult as that, I would with any surgeries that don’t have immediate ‘life or death’ consequences. When I do the calculations and I figure out all the costs flying to Nicaragua and having all four of my wisdom teeth pulled costs me just over half what it will cost me here in Canada.

Cost Price
Flight $650
Dental Work In Nicaragua $200
Total $850
Dental Work in Canada $1,600
Total Savings $750

What is funny is that this is the most expensive you will have to pay, because my friend flew down and got hers removed for $40 + the flight. So knowing that you could save a lot of money by going down to Central America for dental and medical work would you? And if you would what would you do with the extra money you saved? Recover at a hotel on the beach of 2 weeks maybe? This just goes to show how beneficial outsourcing is, and how much better off the world is with open economies….

You forgot some costs, ( hotel, food, time, the effort you will need to find a good dentist in here) etc…. i think you are right… here everything is cheaper, but thats cause.. here people cant afford those prices….and they have to adjust… in tourism there are some hotels working wiht health & etc…. maybe if you consider those other costs at the end it is just the same… but… here you can relax too…

Well i agree with what you have just said. There is the time investment as well as having to find a hotel and pay for food for a couple days. But even so, a good hotel in Nicaragua costs peanuts compared to in the US or Canada where a cheap run down hotel is minimum $60 per night. As for food…well what is considered the best restaurant in all of Nicaragua (El Ranchos…or something like that) i only $80 for 2 of the most expensive on the menu and 2 bottles of wine…Peanuts! The think is that it is so much more expensive in the US and Canada and by going south you can save a ton of money. A person getting braces for example, which is non surgical, will save thousands of dollars. My friends brother got his done for over $4,000 dollars! Which means you are going to save at least a couple thousand dollars. Yes the key to the whole equation is to find someone who is credible, and that may be hard if you don’t know where yo look, but you should easily be able to find someone without having to look too hard. How do you think I found my dentist? A referral service that matches patients with great doctors/dentist would be a great business idea for a Nica wanting to get ahead of the game.

Thanks for the post,

Jonathan.

the time… you still need time… the cost of opportunity is very important…. but you do have a point….

Yes opportunity costs do play a role and should be factored into whatever decision you decide to make. But whether you get work done in the US/Canada or down in Nicaragua, your are still going to require the same amount of recovery time. Now the question is whether you can get all you work done and save a whack lot of cash before Daniel Ortega (Nicaraguan President) over throws democracy and sends the country into the downward spiral of Socialism (Though this seems like more of a creeping revolution like in Venezuela). None the less if he manages to maintain control of Nicaragua, everyone in Nicaragua will only have the veterinarian for all their medical and dental need like it was up to 15 years ago. Ahhhh…you have to love socialist shortages and rationing of pretty much everything…

Well I might run for the 2014 elections if its still a democracy by then ;) If it is, I’ll need to fix all the economic, political, and social damage Ortega is about to cause…

Miss Canada, and Miss Universe 2005, Natalie Glebova came to Nicaragua, and she had a dental work here, and she visited some beaches… where she recorded the video that was sent to Miss Universe. So yes… youre right…. beautiful places to visit, and a cheap & good dental work ;)

My aunt lives in Montreal and at the end of last year she started having health problems, so she went to the hospital, she explained me that to have an appointment with the doctor she had to do it 15 days before and by the time she did the Doctor sent her to take medical exams which takes some other 15 days and when she got the results she had to wait another 15 days to be diagnosed. By the time she went she was feeling even worse and she had no answers to what her condition was, and took some pills that weren’t working for her.

She decided to come to Nicaragua; she paid for special cares during her flight and went straight from the airport in Managua to the doctor’s clinic. She took the same exams and got her diagnosis in less than a week. She spend a month taking the new treatment and her health condition got better, apparently it was an illness that could’ve caused a severe damage to her health and even death since her immune system was slowly attacking her. She spent less than of what she could have spent in Canada and she was treated faster and like royalty. She continues in touch with her Doctor via phone calls and e-mails. By her experience, she said it was the best choice she made and how surprising it was that coming to Nicaragua, been a less developed country saved her life.

Now a year after her visit, she will travel again to Nicaragua to take a general medical exam and see how her health has been improving.
